However, mismanagement and poor planning result in its failure. Director: Richard Attenborough Writers: Cornelius Ryan (book), William Goldman (screenplay) Stars: Sean Connery, Ryan O'Neal, Michael Caine . The true story of Operation Market Garden, the Allies attempt, in September 1944, to hasten the end of WW2 by driving through Belgium and Holland into Germany. The idea was for US airborne divisions to take the towns of Eindhoven and Nijmegen and a British airborne division, reinforced by a Polish airborne brigade, to take the town of Arnhem. They would be reinforced, in due course and in turn, by the British XXX Corps, land-based and driving up from the British lines in the south. The key to the operation was the bridges, as if the Germans held or blew them, the paratroopers could not be relieved. Faulty intelligence, Allied high command hubris and stubborn German resistance would ensure that Arnhem was a bridge too far. 3,260 Comments S W Chu Add a public comment... I don't waste money on going to the movies any more due to the inferior quality of modern picture making. Star-studded cast, incredible footage, and stunning military presence. 94 Ethan Dodd 8 months ago That scene when the Polish paras (I think) trying to cross the river always makes me sad. Such a waste of life. It all was. The ending with the British singing is very sad as well. One of the best war movies out there. 17 aweef wefr 6 months ago My Dutch is sadly by far not good enough, but this is at least the translation of the german stuff. I am sure, that ther are mistakes in it, but maybe it is helpfull to you :) 8:11 von Runstedt (vR): You may beginn Officer: May I first be permitted to say, and I think I speak for all of us, how pleased we are, Field Marshal von Runstedt that you have been reappointed commander of our forces in the West. vR: Save your speech for the victory celebration. Lets get strait to it. Air power? Officer: Air power, Field Marshal? vR: Briefly, please. Officer: Air power is minimal vR: Ammunition? Officer: Ammunition is also minimal vR: Tanks? Troops? Supplies? Officer: Minimal vR: Morale? Officer: ... vR: Nonexistent Officer: What do you think we should do? vR: It is easy - end the war. Officers laught vR: Why in the world are you laughing? Officer: Excuse us. We have just such confidence in you. Everyone knows you have never lost a battle vR: I'm still young. Give it time... vR: the first thing we must do is to turn this rabble into something like an army again. Anything at all on wehen the Invasion of Holland is going to start? Officer: They seem to have paused in Belgium. Most liekly supply problems. Otherwise we can't explain why. vR: I think the reason is, that we are retreating way faster than they can advance 14:47 vR: with this Front Situation, who will command their attack? Montgomery or Patton? Model, what do you think? Model: Patton. vR: He ist their best. Patton will command the attack. I personaly would have liked Montgomery better, but even Eisenhower is not that stupid vR: Bittrich's tank troops need some rest, if they're to stop Patton. Model: Of course. We should pull them back somewhere safe. vR: Safe, quiet and out of the way, but where? Arnhem? Model nodds vR: Arnhem. 47:33 Officer: Fantastic. If I had that amound of material at my desposal for once... 51:09 Officer: Sorry for interrupting you Field Marshal, but british paratroopers have landed. 3 km away from here. Field Marshal (FM): Why should they do this? Here is nothing valuable. FM: I. I am valuable here. They all came to take me prisoner. Get my driver and my car! Officer: Yes Field Marshal. FM: Evacuate the Headquaters. Officer: Yes! FM: And dont vorget my cigarrs. Officer: Yes! 53:26 Officer: Well than try again, somewere has to be there! I have to speak to the Field Marshal! SS-Officer: I dont understand it. Are thausends of paratroopers landing in Holland? Is that a fact? Officer: Yes that bis right, west of Arnhem. SS-Officer: General Model ist there, isnt he? Officer: I am trying to contact him, but his Headquaters is not responding. Here from the Airforce, a lot of troops are landed near south of Nederrijn SS-Officer: Nederrijn? They want the bridge. Officer (on the phone): Yes? That is allright. Keep trying. SS-Officer: Maybe they already jumped into his soup (meaning, they got him) Officer: You wish. Listen, I will take care of Arnheim and you will try to reach Nederrijn as soon as possible. Take everything with you that drives and every man who can march. Secure the bridge. Officer (on the phone again): Yes? No! General Model! Officer (still on the phone but to the SS-Officer) Nobondy must pass the bridge, understood? You have to secure the bridge under all circumstances. Understood? SS-Officer: Yes. 1:05:25 Officer: Excuse me Field Marshal, but I have to ask again for your permission, that we may destroy the bridges od Arnhem and NIEMWEGEN, if the worst case happens. FM: No, absolutly not. Never. Is that understood? We need them for our counterattack. Officer: Counterattack? With what? FM: Paratroopers can't hold themself for long, they have not enough equippment. If we wait them out, they are doomed. Officer: But our tactical situation... FM: I have talked to von Runstedt, we will get all the available Supplies/reinforcements. With every passing hour we get stronger and they get weaker. Officer: But if we destroy the bridges, than... FM: They dont want the bridges. Do you realy think that the british would have landed 12 km away from here, if they wanted the bridges? That is absurd. Officer (thinking just the very best about the FM): I thank you for the tea. 1:10:50 SS-Officer: These Plans were not supposet to leave Englang. Top secret. And now Field Marshal, we have everything we need. Troops, plans, attack and marching routs and the plans for other allied landings. I have prepaired the bridge in Nederrijn for destruction. If I blow it up tonight, this operation "Market Garden" has to fail. FM: Why do all my Generals want do destroy my bridges? Come Ludwig, let's eat. SS-Officer (also thinking just the very best about the FM): Eat? And what about this plan? FM: This Plan? It is wrong anyway, it is a trick. I tell you, we were supposet to find it. White wine or red wine? 1:19:47 Officer: The courage of despair. 2:00:56 Soldier: "No, General." Soldier: "What now?" General: "Annihilate Arnheim." 2:10:00 Fieldmarshal: What can you see, besides the smoke?: SS-General: Nothing else at the moment, but they will try to cross the river FM: They must not succsede SS-General: Of curse they must not succsede, but what do we do if we can't hold them off? I request permission to destroy the bridge. FM: Under no circumstances! SS-General: (sights) Yes, Field Marshal End of the Phonecall. SS-General: They will not cross the bridge and we will not destroy it. Are all explosives in position? SS-Soldier: Yes General, everything is ready. Captain Kraft is ready as orderd. SS-General: Good. This bridge will not fall into enemy hands. I will destroy it as soon as the first british tanks are on it 2:18:20 SS-General: Are you ready? SS-Soldier: Yes, General! 2:19:10 SS-General: Now. SS-Soldier (thinks to himself) Fuck! SS-General: I said now! SS-General: Again! Again! 2:19:34 SS-Soldier: God. Now they are just 18 km away from Arnhem. Who could stop them now? SS-General: Nobody 2:38:24 General: General Ludwig! General: We schould give them the ceasefire. SS-General: Them? General: If we give them just 1 hour... SS-General: They just want to get reinforcements, this is ridiculous! General (to the doctor): Your wish is granted. The ceasefire beginns at 3 pm Doctor: Ceasefire 3, I thank you. General: You are welcome. You can leave now. 60 Stuart of Blyth 10 months ago The Hartenstein Hotel at Oosterbeek, which was the British HQ during the battle, survived and is now a museum well worth the visit. In the grounds are several memorials, one of which has the following words: TO THE PEOPLE OF GELDERLAND 50 years ago British & Polish Airborne soldiers fought here against overwhelming odds to open the way into Germany and bring the war to an early end. Instead we brought death and destruction, for which you have never blamed us. This stone marks our admiration for your great courage, remembering especially the women who tended our wounded. In the long winter that followed your families risked death by hiding Allied soldiers and airmen, while members of the Resistance helped many to safety. You took us then into your homes as fugitives and friends, we took you forever into our hearts. This strong bond will continue long after we are all gone. 1944 ~ SEPTEMBER ~ 1994 29 fiucik1 1 year ago Gloat as much you want, over British during this operation, but it was Pole Gen. In the last days of the war he was sentenced to death for refusing to shoot some American prisoners. His life was spared because the war ended before he could be executed. 17 怎样投资美股?
